Somerset Strike Action Suspended

Last week we reported on strike action planned by waste collection staff working for Somerset Council. Following further talks between the Council’s contractor, Suez and Unite Union, the strike has been suspended.

An improved pay offer has been made by Suez and Unite have agreed to put the offer to their members in a ballot. There will therefore be no strike action until the outcome of the ballot is known. Obviously the risk of further industrial action remains, dependent on the outcome of the ballot.

For the immediate future, residents should continue to leave their waste for collection as usual.

Cllr Leigh Redman told Leveller.Live “this is great news, after finally sitting around the table with Unite South West for meaningful negotiations an offer can be put to members.”

  • Improved pay offer is good news for this hard-working group of people delivering an essential service. Proof that trade unions work for their members. If you want to join a union, why not have a look at the TUC’s Trade Union Finder website.
