Driver kills his own dog – Cheddar

A Cheddar man has been banned from driving after pleading guilty to a drink drive offence. At around 9.40pm on Saturday 18 December 2021, William Levell, 78, drove his Jaguar X Type onto his driveway. He collided with a parked car. He then reversed before driving forward again, hitting and fatally injuring his border collie.

Police attended Lower North Street, Cheddar following a report of an incident. Levell was arrested after a roadside breath test revealed him to be intoxicated. A subsequent breath test at Bridgwater Police Station showed he was nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol.

On Monday 10 January he pleaded guilty at Taunton Magistrates Court. He was guilty of driving a motor vehicle whilst unit through alcohol. He was banned from driving for 17 months and ordered to pay a fine and costs of £379.

Investigating officer, Special Constable Christopher Rees, said: “There can be no excuse for getting behind the wheel intoxicated. This case demonstrates the devastating consequences that driving under the influence of alcohol can have.”
