MP slams reduced hours at Minehead MIU

MP Ian Liddell Grainger is not convinced by the night time closure of Minehead’s Minor Injury Unit. The MP for Bridgwater and West Somerset smells a rat. He told The Leveller “I am deeply unhappy about this situation. Even more unhappy than I was back in July when the announcement was sprung on us. We are moving into the winter months when journey times to Taunton are likely to become longer and more fraught. Ambulance response times will be even longer than the current, abysmal average in West Somerset.

He added “Clearly what is going to happen now is that on May 1 it will announce that Minehead has managed pretty well without the unit for 10 months, no-one has died and therefore the closure will become permanent.

And he has a view of the motives behind the closures. He told us it was “solely because the board will not allocate the funding to employ appropriately-qualified night-time staff.

We should point out that the Minor Injuries Unit is not closing. It is only the night time service that is closed until next May. The unit will remain open from 8am to 9pm.
