Minehead MIU to close at nighttime
Minehead’s Minor Injuries Unit night time closure is to continue. Somerset NHS Trust which runs the unit, closed the night time service on 1 July this year. That was initially to be a temporary measure. The Trust have now announced a further extension of 6 months to the night time closure.
The Trust stress that the Unit will remain open open from 8am – 9pm seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The Trust agreed to a temporary closure to see if it had any impact on services elsewhere. Dr Matt Hayman, Deputy Medical Director for the Trust explains they had concerns about safety. He told us “We first closed the Minehead MIU temporarily overnight for four months from 1 July because we have concerns about the safety of the overnight service.”
The Trust acknowledge that local people are concerned by the temporary closure of the overnight service. They have described long distance and difficulty in travelling to the nearest Emergency Department in Taunton.
However the Trust say they have looked to see if the temporary closure has had any impact on other NHS services. They claim they have found no discernible impact on overnight attendances at Musgrove’s Emergency Department. Nor was there any impact on NHS 111 or the out of hours GP services in the Minehead area. they also noted there was no noticeable impact on attendances at the Minehead MIU shortly after it opens at 8am.
Dr Hayman concludes: “We will spend the next six months working with Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group and the providers of NHS services to look at how we meet the overnight health needs of the population of Minehead in a safe and sustainable“
