Fatal Collision West pennard

A frantic search and rescue operation was launched last night near West Pennard. A car ended up in a water-filled ditch next to a farm track off East Street Lane at around 7.15 last night (2 October). Avon & Somerset Police received a call from the passenger in the car. Both passenger and driver were trapped in the vehicle.

Unfortunately the passenger could not give a precise location and it was by then dark. Police carried out a search of the area, including the use of the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter. The car was located by officers at 8.04pm.

Sadly, despite the efforts of officers and ambulance personnel the driver of the car could not be saved. He died at the scene. Police have so far only said he was “a man in his fifties”. However they have said the man’s next of kin have been informed. They will be supported by a specially trained officer at this very difficult time.

The passenger was freed from the vehicle and taken to Yeovil District Hospital as a precaution.

The collision is now under Police investigation. Did you see the incident? Did you see a car in the area at that time of the evening. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. Please call 101 and give the call handler the reference number 5221230163.
