M5 closed southbound

The M5 is closed southbound between Junctions 24 (Bridgwater) and 25 (Taunton). It is currently anticipated that the southbound carriageway will be shut until the afternoon.

This follows an incident involving a single car at around 4am this morning. Apparently at least one occupant has died. The driver was arrested and taken to hospital with injuries. They are not believed life-threatening or life-changing.

Avon & Somerset Police are carrying out an investigation but have not released any further details as yet.

A large amount of traffic is stuck on the closed section of the motorway. Highways England traffic officers are working to release that traffic as soon as possible.

A fully signed diversion route is in place (follow the solid diamond symbol) via the A38.
