Somerset line upgrades

Train services between Westbury and Taunton will be changed over Easter to allow track repairs and renewal.

This will effect services to stations at Taunton, Castle Cary, Yeovil Penn Mill and Frome. Network Rail will be carrying out a variety of vital upgrades in Somerset, This will include track renewals at Witham Friary and Somerton Tunnel. There will be signalling upgrades along the Westbury to Taunton line.

Other work will involve replacing a bridge over the River Tone close to the Athelney level crossing.
Readers will recall that a major derailment happened at Witham Friary in 2017.
To allow the work to take place, trains will be diverted during Easter weekend.

Direct, fast trains between Paddington and the South West will use an alternative route. Trains will still run from Reading to Taunton. However this will extend journey times by around 40 minutes, from Friday 2 to Thursday 8 April.

Semi-fast, stopping services will terminate at either
a) Westbury from Good Friday (2 April) to Easter Monday (5 April), or
b) Castle Cary from Tuesday 6 to Thursday 8 April, and will run to an amended timetable.

Trains between Bristol Temple Meads and Weymouth will terminate at Westbury or Frome. Here buses will replace trains to Yeovil Pen Mill, from Friday 2 to Monday 5 April.
