Final wave of Somerset COVID centres open

The final three GP-led community vaccination sites will start to vaccinate people starting this weekend. There are 13 primary care networks across Somerset and each of these now has a vaccination centre. This is part of what the CCG are calling a phased delivery plan.

The new vaccination sites are at:

  • Wincanton Community Hospital,
  • College Way Surgery in Taunton, and
  • Wellington Community Hospital.

Practice teams are putting together the final preparations for the new community locations. However vaccinations began on Wednesday this week at the Wincanton Community Hospital. The other two are expected to start vaccinating over the course of this weekend.

It is expected that the new GP-led sites will be using both vaccines. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the newly approved Oxford/AstraZeneca. As with the other sites, vaccinations will be initially offered to the priority groups:

  • care home residents,
  • people aged over 80 and
  • frontline health and care staff.

GP practice teams will be joining forces with Somerset County Council and District Council colleagues. They will be calling as many eligible people as possible from the high priority groups to arrange appointments. It is expected that over the next few weeks the NHS vaccination programme will ramp up. The expectation is that a significant proportion of highest risk patients will be vaccinated across all sites.

What is missing is any firm numbers. Which given the detailed lists the teams are working with, and the limited vaccine resource, must be easily available. While it is good to know that thirteen GP-led community sites and two hospital hubs are now up and running, what does that mean?

As ever, please do not contact your surgery, they will contact you. Your GP practice will be in touch directly to organise an appointment when it is your turn for a vaccination. Please also remember that vaccination is only part of the picture
and continue to follow government guidelines.

For reference the other 10 sites in the Primary Care Network are at:

  • Taunton Vale Healthcare, Taunton;
  • The Mulberry Centre, Berrow;
  • West Mendip Community Hospital, Glastonbury;
  • The Gateway Centre in Yeovil.
  • Frome Medical Centre
  • Minehead Community Hospital
  • Lisieux Way, Taunton
  • Henhayes Community Centre, in Crewkerne.
  • North Petherton Rugby Club
  • Shape Centre Mendip District Council offices in Shepton Mallet.

  • You’ve not included Blackbrook medical centre in Lisieux Way Taunton, which has been inoculating this week.,

    • Which would explain why, having double checked – only 12 are listed and there are `13 Primary Care Networks listed! Thanks for pointing that out David.
