Government support for Wells Cinema Centre

Culture Secretary, Oliver Dowden has just announced grant awards for 201 independent cinemas across England. The support for independent cinemas announced this Christmas totals £16 million. Aside from those already successful, more grant applications are currently being assessed. Cinemas will be able to apply for another £14 million in grants in the New Year. This will be in the second round of the . The grant applications are being run through the British Film Institute.

Of particular interest to our readers will be the success of The Wells Film Centre. The Centre will receive £78,980 from the Culture Recovery Fund. The centre, described as “a family run cinema” has been given the money to keep its programme alive into the New Year. It was commended for a programme for young people, parents and babies, its popular Tea Matinees.

It is also well known locally for holding regular talks with invited art and history speakers.

Owner, Sally Cooper was clearly relieved to get the grant award “After what has been an exceedingly difficult year due to Covid-19, the financial support from the Culture Recovery Fund has helped secure the continued survival of the Wells Film Centre so that we can continue entertaining and bringing together our local community.”
