Big win for Yeovil’s Octagon Theatre

More awards under the cultural recovery programme were announced last night. The biggest by far was nearly £300,000 awarded to the Octagon Theatre, Yeovil. Run and paid for by South Somerset District Council the Theatre has received the most generous grant of any venue in Somerset. As the cultural hub of Yeovil the award will be welcome. Provided that the money is ring fenced by SSDC and not used to fund other projects.

It can only be hoped the money will go towards some more imaginative programming. Even, perish the thought, putting on plays maybe?

Meanwhile there were less generous awards for other local venues including:

  • Princess Theatre, Burnham on Sea £66,700
  • Shangri-La, Glastonbury £61,059
  • Creative Innovation Centre. Taunton £77,345

Sadly nothing was on offer for the one place in Yeovil you could still go to see plays performed. The Swan Theatre has to date not benefited from any of the packages on offer.
