Police officer assaulted in Yeovil

The headline article in the July Leveller is about Police disproportionately stopping people from a BAME background. Yesterday that story was given a different perspective. A Police Officer stopped a 33-year-old man in The Crescent, Yeovil, at around 9.20am.

In the course of the stop and search it became apparent that Andrius Butkus was carrying a knife. He assaulted the Officer and threatened him with the knife.

Butkus, of Beer Street, Yeovil, has now been charged with assaulting an emergency worker, escaping lawful custody and possessing a knife/bladed article in a public place (a lock knife).

He  was remanded in custody and will appear before Yeovil Magistrates’ Court today.
