Local press soldier on
Although several weekly paid for papers have closed for the pandemic, all the local paid for papers in Somerset have continued publication. Despite falling hard copy circulations, these papers continue to have the backing of some very large corporations. Despite the cuddly local names, all our main Somerset paid fors are produced two large corporations. Gannet, the US based media giant publish the County Gazette, Chard and Ilminster and Bridgwater Mercury. London headquartered Reach plc publish the Western Gazette, Frome Standard and Mid Somerset Gazette series.
Here in Leveller Towers readers will know by now that we have managed to continue publishing The Leveller in hard copy. With limited outlets and some unusual and new ones, we managed to get April out in hard copy. We’ve also published an online edition for readers who cannot get out and have internet access. We’re planning a 2 week break and then to produce a full May edition to our usual timetable. There should be continuous hard copy publishing and we’ll continue our online newsfeed too….
We are not the only ones. Independent papers the Yeovil Press and Ilminster Press both managed to get editions out for April and plan to produce their May edition too.
We understand the Frome Times, another independent, is also continuing to publish through the pandemic.
So far the only paper we are aware of that has ceased is the Wells Voice. this is only a temporary break though. They will take May off but should be back for June all being well.
