Joy riding in Cheddar

Several reports were received yesterday (14 April) of drivers racing through the Cheddar Gorge. More specifically the Police are concerned that with minimal traffic on the road, cars are being driven dangerously through the Gorge.

When the Police arrived, one motorist was stopped after trying to get away from them. The 29 year old male driver was reported for allegedly:

  • driving without tax,
  • driving without due care and attention
  • and not maintaining the car to a safe standard due to insufficient tyre tread.

Not only that but it transpired the driver had previously been warned regarding antisocial driving. So following this latest incident the vehicle was seized.

Following a thorough search of the vehicle he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a class B drug. And also for possession of class B drug. He has been released under investigation.

A number of other vehicles have been reported and Police are currently trying to identify a red BMW 3 Series.

Anyone with information can report it online https://www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/report/ and give reference number 5220079552. Alternatively, if you cannot report it online, call 101.

Speaking about the incidents PC James Fowler wanted to reinforce the public safety message “We take reports of antisocial behaviour and driving in Cheddar Gorge extremely seriously, no more so now than when we are all being asked to stay at home to protect the NHS and save lives.
