WH Smith fined £337,500

Following our report last week on WH Smith, the company were fined in court yesterday following an incident in Taunton. A 64 year old customer fell through an open trapdoor on the shop floor, leaving her with serious injuries.

As we noted at the time similar incidents have occurred at WH Smith stores elsewhere in the UK.

The company have apologised to the court and reassured them that their policies and procedures had now been changed to prevent a similar incident happening in future.

WH Smith pleaded guilty to health and safety breaches, at Taunton Magistrates Court and was fined £168,750 for two counts of breaching health and safety laws, a total of £337,500. It was also ordered to pay £135,492.66 in costs and a £120 victim surcharge.
