Too sad for words
Avon & Somerset Police are appealing for witnesses sought after a World War I memorial was damaged in Wincanton. The large poppy-shaped installation at Cemetery Lane, Cale Park was damaged last Friday (19th October). The memorial’s bespoke glass front was cracked sometime between 1.30pm and 2pm.
It really is astonishing, as we approach the centenary celebrations of the end the 1918 Armistice, that anyone could find gratification in an exercise of such crassness and stupidity.
The Poppt of Honour was only unveiled on 6th October and was designed to hold all 1,115,471 individual Remembrance Poppies and the wooden box containing artifacts and small vials of soil from the battlefields from every continent involved in World War 1. Some 275,000 people from 37 countries wrote out the names of those who died or went missing in action on the more than 1 million poppies that filled the galss and steel construction.
As part of their inquiry Poice are keen to speak to three men aged in their late teens or early 20s who were seen acting suspiciously in the area at the time of the incident. Two of the men were wearing grey jogging bottoms while the other wore blue jeans along with a black fleece.
Anyone with information is asked to call 101 and provide the call handler with the reference 5218234119.
