M5 closed

A multi-agency operation is underway on the M5 in Somerset following a fatal collision. Police were called out just after 8.30am this morning,  Thursday 13th September to a collision involving a HGV and several cars on the southbound carriageway near junction 24, Huntworth.

Sadly two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Four other people have been taken to hospital, at least two of whom have serious injuries.

The road is closed in both directions between junction 24 southbound and junction 25 northbound, Taunton.

All the agencies are working as quickly as possible to reopen the northbound carriageway but the southbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for the foreseeable future while emergency services complete their work at the scene.

Update

As off 1pm today Police notified us that the Northbound carriageway had been reopened.

As of 4pm today Police have told us the southbound carriageway will be closed throughout the rush hour. Please make sure you avoid the area if you possibly can and find an alternative route. Expect extra congestion on the A38 and A39.
