Chard Carnival accident
Police are appealing for witnesses following an incident at Chard Carnival last night (Saturday 14 October). Just before 10pm when the carnival procession was over and the floats were being “broken down” a female member of the road crew became trapped under one of the carnival carts.
The injured woman suffered serious leg injuries and was airlifted to hospital where she remains in a critical condition. An investigation into the incident has been launched and the Heath and Safety Executive and local authority have been advised. Speaking for the police Chief Inspector John Holt told us “We believe this to have been an unusual and exceptional incident which happened at the end of the carnival parade. We will be looking into the circumstances but do not anticipate it will have any impact on other carnivals planned over the next few weeks.”
If anyone witnessed the incident please call the police using 101 and quoting reference 5217235336
That will be a concern but it has to be said that incidents during the main carnival procession itself have been thankfully rare. In the meantime we wish the woman a speedy and complete recovery.
