Resurfacing work to hit Langport Again

Work to resurface a main road through the centre of Langport is due to take place later next month. The improvements on the A378 will require a temporary road closure and this has been timed to take place over three evenings (between 6.30pm to 11.30pm) starting on 14 September to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Residents will have painful memories of the full carriageway resurfacing on the A378 that was completed through Langport last year. However, County Highways tell us that a section of the new material laid between Eastover and Shires Garage is showing early signs of failure and is defective. As part of the works, this surface will be removed and replaced. The good news is that the contractor will be carrying out the extra work at no cost to the County Council – as it should be.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways tells us “I can understand that people will be frustrated at further work in Langport and I apologise for the inconvenience. For context, we receive 20,000 tonnes of material every year and it is very rare that we find failures of this nature. However, when we do, we have the necessary safeguards in place to make sure any defective material is replaced by the contractor at no cost to the tax payer.”

While work is underway, the A378 will be closed from the junction with Eastover to the junction with the A372 at Shires Garage. A diversion route will be signposted.
