Crack appears in Langport’s Hanging Chapel

A slightly alarming crack has appeared in the wall on the north side of the Hanging Chapel, the gateway to the old burgh hill on which the original settlement of Langport stands. The crack was discovered last year but when contractors examined the chapel prior to repointing work, they noticed that the crack had widened. With concern that the structure may have moved and bearing in mind it is over 700 years old, the Langport Town Trust have authorised clerk David Mears to get a structural engineer to examine the building as a matter of urgency. If there is any remedial action needed, that will be put to the next Town Trust meeting at the start of June.
