Due to a bit of a massive error on our part, the following article which was due to be in our March edition got “left behind.” This is particularly galling as it was for a fund raiser for the flooding. I reproduce it below in full with apologies to all concerned and in the hope that you all share it as widely as possible!
Auction of Goods and Promises for Somerset Community Foundation flood relief Othery Village Hall is holding an Auction of Goods and Promises on the 21st March to raise funds for victims of the recent flooding. Villagers of Othery know quite a lot about flooding, having spent much of last month cut off from both Taunton and Langport with only one main road out of the village (that to Street) totally free of water. Fortuitously most of the village was built on a hill which has proved to be something of a saving grace as the waters continued to rise into late February. The auction proper will start at 7pm but you can come and view the lots from 6pm. If you cannot be there in person you are welcome to bid via email. Email bids for items will be accepted until noon on 20th March on: otheryvillagehall@hotmail.co.uk
The bidding list will be available in Othery shops and the post office, also by email and on the FLAG website. There will be refreshments including filled rolls/pasties/ sausage rolls/ cakes and tea and coffee on sale, all donated so all money goes to the fund. And a bar will run for the duration of the event. We should point out that all of the food has been donated and some of the bar stock will be provided free by Mark and Sarah Soutar of The London Inn. The idea is that all of the money from the evening will be donated to the Somerset Community Foundation flood appeal.
To say the donation of items for the auction has been generous is to significantly understate the case with items being donated from as far away as Ireland. They include ” A Murmuration of Starlings” by Lynne Newton which is the actual print from the gallery which won the award and appeared in all the national newspapers, a book signed by Peter Hart the best-selling Great War historian, 12 original limited prints from Nancy Farmer plus a whole array of things from hampers to reiki sessions, croquet lessons and most stops in between. It promises to be a fantastic evening, please come along and support the flood appeal.
