Latest Flooding update
Received from the Environment Agency this afternoon, this is the latest situation update. As ever please pass on to those who need it. Equally as ever, this is Environment Agency information and we cannot take responsibility for its accuracy.
Weather forecast
Dry and settled weather is forecast until Sunday (16 March). There may be some isolated showers, but we are anticipating no more than 1mm of rain.
Flood warnings and flooding situation
There are three flood warnings still in force. These are for Curry Moor/Haymoor, Saltmoor/Northmoor including Moorland and the A361 (East Lyng to Burrowbridge).
Water quality – Our water quality monitors on the Somerset Levels and Moors show that there are currently no significant water quality issues.
Significant issues still include:
- Muchelney, Thorney and Langport – Some roads leading to the villages of Muchelney and Thorney remain flooded. There are three pumps operating at Midelney and four at Huish Episcopi. Monksleaze Clyce is fully open at the moment but will be gradually closed over the next few days.
- West Sedgemoor – The levels at West Sedgemoor Pumping Station continue to drop slowly. Four pumps are currently running. We anticipate that the roads serving West Sedgemoor residents will be clear of water in three to four days.
- Curry Moor – Nine pumps are operating. Four temporary pumps have been installed at Haymoor and are operational.
- Northmoor and Saltmoor – Northmoor and Saltmoor Pumping Stations are operating at full capacity. We currently have approximately 40 pumps serving the area in and around Moorland. The levels at Northmoor and Saltmoor are dropping.
- Sowy – We currently have eight pumps in place at Dunball, all of which are operational and running during high tides. Water in the King’s Sedgemoor Drain will continue to flow into the Parrett estuary under gravity when the tide allows, currently passing 70 cubic metres/second (known as cumecs) of water. The pumps remove an additional 15 cumecs on high tides.
- Westonzoyland – Water levels are now nearly back to normal and are being maintained by operating the fixed pump. The temporary defences that were installed as an additional precaution at Aller Drove and Westonzoyland are still in place.
- Aller Drove – The pumps at Beer Wall are running as required for the increased flows passing through the Sowy. We will continue to monitor water levels downstream on the King’s Sedgemoor Drain as part of the overall pumping strategy and pump operating timings.
- Long Load – Levels in the River Yeo have9 dropped and are currently stable. Levels on the adjacent moors remain high but have started to fall slowly. There are three pumps currently operating.
- Oath – see West Sedgemoor for an update on pumping activity and the clearance of flood water to roads.
